Dirk Goethals and Ann Desmet retire: a look back at their careers at Athena Graphics

After 21 and 35 years respectively at Athena Graphics, Dirk Goethals, Business Unit and Sales Manager Netherlands, and Ann Desmet, DTP Operator, are now enjoying their retirement. Two different careers, but a shared history full of commitment, craftsmanship, and collegiality.

What moments from your career at Athena Graphics stand out most?
There have been many memorable moments. Some are not suitable for publication. Still, a few clearly stand out. I will never forget my job interview with the late Mr. Geert and Ignace. I am proud that I was able to realise their dream: the establishment of an office in the Netherlands. The opening of our Veenendaal branch in 2007 remains a real highlight. They say there are always two days you remember: the first and the last day at work.

What will you miss most from your career?
The thrill of winning a new client with the support of the technical team. In addition, I will especially miss the strong relationships and connections with my clients and my network. Sparring with colleagues always gave me new insights and energy. And of course, the Champions League team in Veenendaal, which was truly special to me.

What are your plans for the future?
I like to stay active. I am involved in local associations, compose music, and write texts. I also want to make more time for family and friends and spoil my grandchildren. Travelling with my wife is also high on the agenda. She was my rock and support during the long working days in the Netherlands for many years. Over the last 20 years, we were only married for 10 years. I have some catching up to do. ;-)

What moments from your career at Athena Graphics stand out most?
In the 35 years I worked for Athena, there were many beautiful moments. The most impactful was the move to the beautiful new building in Liebeekstraat in 2011. Rightly something to be proud of. Several of our annual activities and team buildings can also be described as memorable. Sometimes a bit daring, sometimes hilarious, but always fun and connecting. I look back on those times with warm feelings.

What will you miss most from your career?
My colleagues… Over the years you build a bond and learn to understand each other perfectly. They have enriched my life. I will also miss the creative side of my work as a prepress specialist.

What are your plans for the future?
I am still figuring things out. It is not easy to end a professional career after 44 years. At the moment, there are still several small home projects I would like to finish properly and quickly. Travelling a bit more is definitely already on the agenda. In autumn, I will start several creative courses, so we will see what comes my way.
